Dr Hazarika fit, takes up new assignment

GUWAHATI, July 25 – Music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika is hale and hearty and there is no need to worry about his health right now. In fact, the national award- winning musician has already signed two films as music director, which is perhaps a record for any music director at the age of 83 years.

Talking over phone from Mumbai, filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi informed that there is no need to worry about Dr Hazarika’s health. Two films, one in Hindi and another in Bengali to be directed by Lajmi herself, will have music scores by the octogenarian musical genius. Though Lajmi did not wish to divulge any details on the upcoming films, she revealed that Dr Hazarika has already signed contracts as music director of both the films.

Allaying apprehension about his health in view of a section of the media here reporting about the by-pass heart surgery the Dada Saheb Phalke Awardeee is scheduled to undergo on August 4 next, Kamal Kotoky, a close associate of Dr Hazarika said that the surgery would be carried out by a team of super specialist doctors at the Kokilaben Ambani Heart Institute, an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group hospital in Mumbai. Dr Hazarika who recently returned from New Delhi after receiving the highly-prestigious Sangeet Ratna award of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, complained of breathing problem on July 16 last.

Doctors looking after the cultural icon of Assam diagnosed a minor blockage in an artery after an angiography test. As the team of doctors at the reputed hospital decided against angioplasty in view of the age of the music maestro, a by-pass surgery has been prescribed. The team of doctors who will perform the operation on August 4 includes experts from UK and India.
