Mumbai/Guwahati, Aug. 18: Bhupen Hazarika was released from Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital today, 10 days after he underwent a bypass surgery following a sudden bout of breathlessness.

“He is hale and hearty. After his release from the hospital at 4pm we took him back home to our Lokhandwala apartment in Mumbai,” said Hazarika’s companion, film director Kalpana Lajmi.

The balladeer’s biographer and aide, Surjya Hazarika, said in Guwahati tonight that “Bhupenda wished to go home today itself after doctors attending to him declared him fit for release”.

The singer called his sister-in-law and late Jayanta Hazarika’s wife, Manisha, in Guwahati immediately after his release.

“He told her he was doing well. He said though he was initially feeling weak after the surgery, the hospital took good care of him. He said he even liked the hospital food,” said an aide of the singer.
A visit from Tina Ambani (the hospital has been named after her parents-in-law) and a call from his ex-wife Priyam kept Hazarika occupied over the last weekend as doctors closely monitored his health.

Hazarika had been a little emotional since he received the call from Priyam a couple of days back. “She called from Canada where she stays with their son Tej,” the source said.

Tina Ambani’s visit on Friday moved the maestro. “Bhupenda was overwhelmed by the attention. He told her that he loved the hospital and would talk to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi about setting up a similar facility back home,” the source said.

Nurses who attended on Hazarika in room number 1319 said he thanked them profusely before leaving. “He was always listening to music. That helped him recover a great deal. He is a very strong person,” a nurse said.
