Dr Hazarika’s birthday celebrated

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 – The birthday of legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika was celebrated in Assam and Mumbai today with much enthusiasm. The birthday of Dr Hazarika was celebrated in Mumbai with a day long programme in the Assam Bhawan and the presence of the legendary musician added colour to the programme.

The Deputy Resident Commissioner of the Assam Bhawan, Mumbai, Debashis Sarma said that Dr Hazarika, accompanied by filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi arrived in the Bhawan at around 1 pm today. He was given a rousing reception by 35 cancer patients undergoing treatment in Mumbai, their relatives and the staff of the Bhawan. Dr Hazarika spent some time with the patients with words of encouragement.

Dr Pradeep Kaul and his team of doctors, who recently performed the bypass surgery on Dr Hazarika to give him a new lease of life, were also felicitated on the occasion.

In the city, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organized a programme called ‘Uddipana’ (encouragement) to celebrate the occasion on the southern bank of the Dihalipukhuri this evening.

The best singers of Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University and Assam Agricultural University, the best singers of the Gauhati University Youth Festivals and the best signers of one college from each of the 23 districts of the State took part in the cultural function held on the occasion.
