GUWAHATI, June 29 – It was a unique moment in the life of the living legend who has inspired scores through his songs. On Tuesday Dr Bhupen Hazarika received the Labanya Hazarika Adarsha Matri Award bestowed on his mother Shantipriya Hazarika posthumously and he described it as a momentous occasion in his life.

The award was instituted last year by the Asom Lekhika Sanstha to commemorate a mother who has played a significant and emulative role in the socio-cultural life of the State.

The award giving function was held at the Tirthanath Sarma auditorium here.

Receiving the award from writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Dr Hazarika said that this concept of honouring a mother will go a long way in building a progressive society. He said this award will inspire every mother who has been sacrificing much for the well-being of their children and also contributing towards the development of the society.

Dr Hazarika’s mother had played a major role in promoting folk music and inculcating love for the same in her own children as well as the neighbours. She was actively involved in various social works and had a penchant for the traditional religious music.
