Artiste fraternity urges media to leave Bhupen Hazarika 'alone'

Guwahati, Dec 11 : The close scrutiny of personal life of music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarkia by Assam media in the last few weeks have led to an appeal by the artiste community of the state not to 'stifle' the bard with 'excess love'.

A major controversy had erupted in the state last month over Dadasaheb Bhalke awardee Dr Hazarika's legacy after reports were published of the veteran musician participating in an advertisement shoot for a cement company.

He had to be carried on a chair to reach the shooting venue as his frail health made it impossible to walk beyond a few steps.

Soon after, local media had flashed copies of his purported Will, in which he has reportedly named filmmaker and his companion Kalpana Lajmi as the main heir to his property.

As the controversies over Dr Hazarika continue to grow, the artiste fraternity of the state has come out in his support.

Urging the people and media to refrain from trying to enter his personal life, a statement issued by the artiste fraternity and signed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Barua said, ''Reports in a section of the media in Assam centered around Bhupen Hazarika's personal issues have caused the artiste fraternity immense pain.'' ''We feel that the issue is absolutely personal which should be left on the individual in question in general,'' the statement added.

Appealing that an artiste must not be 'dictated by any external agency in expressing the self', the statement further said, ''When the artiste in question is someone who is unrivalled and unparalleled in his contributions to the state, there is an added responsibility enjoined upon the society to allow him the leeway.'' Stating that Dr Hazarika always viewed himself as a citizen of the world, the artiste fraternity appealed for restrain and deference towards the senior musician who is not in the best of his health now.

''We are sure that there was no underlying intent while presenting the report, but love, in excess, at times could stifle.

We therefore request everyone to leave him alone,'' the statement added.

Chameli’ sees film, 35 yrs later

Guwahati, Dec. 7: Binita Buragohain watched one of the biggest ever Assamese hits, Chameli Memsaab, for the first time, 35 years after it was made. And Binita herself was Chameli Memsaab!

Binita revealed this today saying she wanted to make a comeback to films.

The film was about a garden manager falling in love with a tea community girl.

“I was very hurt at not being invited for the premiere of the film and so I decided never to see it,” she said. “I finally saw it on a CD only this year... it was a very enlightening experience.”

However, she added that one of the songs was missing on the CD version.

The CD was given to her by Abdul Majid, the director of the award-winning movie.

“Old Assamese cinema needs to be preserved. Only then will the present generation be able to get an insight into its past,” she said, referring to the missing song.

Recalling the days of making the film, Binita said, “Those days were different unlike now. The unit was like a well-knit family and all of us worked very hard to complete the film.”

Bhupen Hazarika won the national award for his song in the film. After Chameli Memsaab, Binita acted in Bisesh Erati and Xon Tora.

Filmography of Bhupen Hazarika

I'm Hazarika's wife: Kalpana Lajmi

Announced filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi to a rowdy mob of people, who asked her who she was to stop them from meeting Dr Bhupen Hazarika

Recently, when Dr Bhupen Hazarika got caught in mob frenzy, his long-time companion, filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, came to his rescue.

Lajmi, who has been living-in with the 84-year-old director-music composer for over four decades, called herself "his wife" for the very first time.

Hazarika was travelling and shooting for a new music video, Our North East, Our Star, when a mob from a small town called Chandrapur near Guwahati, Assam, pounced on him, intending to just touch him and talk to him.

Hazarika tried reasoning with them but did not succeed. "When they could not get close to him they got angry and unruly," says a representative of Star Cement, the company handling the project.

In fact, an exceptionally rowdy section of the crowd began asking Kalpana Lajmi why she was not letting them get close to Hazarika. "They asked Kalpanaji who she was to stop them from making contact with him. She replied, 'I am his wife,'" says a source present on the sets.

Lajmi was 17 and Hazarika 45, when she fell in love with him. Though Hazarika had a son from his earlier marriage to Priyamvada, Lajmi didn't think twice before leaving home to start living with him. But in all these years, Lajmi and Hazarika never married.

Two years ago, when asked why she didn't ever feel the need to marry him, Lajmi had said, "A few months ago, my mother told me for the nth time that I should marry Bhupen now. And I turned around and asked her, 'Why mom? Just because a piece of paper (read marriage certificate) will calm you down?"

Ironically, only when Lajmi called herself Hazarika's wife recently, did a mob actually calm down.
