GUWAHATI, Nov 28: Clearly upset by the recent controversy over the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, the music maestro’s sister Sudakshina Sarma said in a press release, “Being one of the seniormost members of the family present, I feel Bhupenda neither can be confined within the family itself nor to any other institutions/zones. Because, he is the ‘voice of the people’. The recent controversy raised in the print as well as the visual media amongst the close aides blaming others and one another is regrettable and should cease immediately, otherwise we will be doing injustice to the memory and legacy of Bhupenda. One will have to come forward for the rightful cause of preserving and propagating Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s creations, memories, remains and philosophy by shedding one’s self-interest so that the future generation (s) is/are benefited towards their endeavour for truth. Everyone responsible from the masses at large must come forward by sharing and shouldering this massive/huge responsibility in revamp/reconstituting/reconstructing the Trust.”

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust said, “Considering the recent allegations made against the Trust, we have decided to urge the State Government to scrutinize all the financial transactions and dealings of the Trust since its inception. Also, if the recent controversy over the Trust has hurt anyone, we would like to apologize to the people of Assam for this. Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy is not anybody’s private property. We have requested that all property, movable and immovable, belonging to the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust should henceforth be maintained and managed by the Assam Government. In future we refuse to be dragged into any further controversy.”
