Bhupenda goes unsung

Deepika Patar, Guwahati (May 5): Assam’s collective promise to keep alive the memory of balladeer Bhupen Hazarika may be fading. And very fast, it seems. The place which recorded footfalls by the tens of thousands not very long ago was virtually empty on Saturday, 6th months to the day since the death of Assam’s cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika.

At a solemn function organised to mark the six months of the balladeer’s death – at the very place he was cremated with full state honours and where a memorial is slated to be built – only a handful of people were present. “We had invited several senior artistes for today’s ritual but no one has bothered to attend the function. It has hurts us a lot,” said singer Manisha Hazarika, the sister-in-law of Bhupen Hazarika. Read More at
