Dr Hazarika’s birth anniversary celebrations in State

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - Cultural icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s songs reverberated in every corner of the State today on the occasion of the maestro’s 89th birth anniversary, which was celebrated with great enthusiasm across Assam.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi paid homage to Dr Hazarika at his Samadhisthal at Jalukbari here this morning along with Minister for Cultural Affairs Bismita Gogoi.

Later, Gogoi also announced an allocation of Rs 50 lakh for constructing an auditorium in the name of Dr Hazarika at Boko and Rs 1 lakh for the treatment of Dr Hazarika’s companion and filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi.

“Dr Bhupen Hazarika was a humanist and his cultural endeavours were the embodiment of Assamese culture, heritage and beliefs. We all must follow his footsteps to establish peace, harmony and unity in the society,” said Gogoi while speaking on the occasion.

He further stated that the Samadhisthal has been designed to preserve his memories and inspire the coming generation.

Later, in a central inaugural programme of open stages along with gardens in 198 Block development areas of Assam at Bandapara of Boko, Gogoi said that the Government of Assam would ensure every step to preserve the memories of the Sudhakantha.

“He touched the heart of every Assamese irrespective of caste, community, religion or language. His life would continue to inspire the generations to come,” Gogoi said, adding that after Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev, Dr Bhupen Hazarika was the most popular personality of Assam. The Chief Minister also announced that the State government would offer financial help to 1,000 artistes who need help due to illness or some other reasons.

State Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Rakibul Hussain, while speaking on the occasion said that the project of open stages along with garden in the block areas was started on November 5, 2014 and within one year, the stages have been inaugurated.

Samar Hazarika, brother of Dr Bhupen Hazarika lauded the efforts of the State government to encourage the local artistes of the State.
