Bhupenda’s brother Balen Hazarika no more

GUWAHATI, Feb 6 - Renowned cultural organiser of the undivided Assam Balen Hazarika died at a city hospital today after a brief illness. Brother of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Balen Hazarika was also a retired professor of botany at the St Anthony’s College, Shillong.
The city-based Dr Bhupen Hazarika Foundation has said that though he was based in Shillong, Balen Hazarika was playing a major role for preservation of the works of Bhupenda as an active member of the Foundation.

Late Hazarika was a leading organiser of the State’s leading cultural organisation Madhuchayanika during the 1960s and was also associated with the activities of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). During that period he also worked with the leading artistes of the country.

He also played a major role as cultural secretary of the Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) in holding a cultural function of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rava after the late doyen’s coming overground from his self-exile, said Foundation general secretary Dipanka Hazarika in a press release.

The Foundation has mourned the death of Balen Hazarika. New York-based Tej Hazarika, the son of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, has also mourned the death of Balen Hazarika. Tej Hazarika took the initiative to constitute the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Foundation, Dipanka Hazarika said.
